Alexendria : one of the most fascinating cities in Egypt

Entering Alexendria from the east

Taking a right turn over Alexendria, Egypt, now heading south over the Nile Delta and towards Cairo

Alexendria, which I had the chance to visit nearly 17 years ago, is arguably even more fascinating than Cairo. This city was founded by Alexender, the Macedonian king, in his own honour, and is on an island, founded in 331 BC ( 2500 years ago). Nicknamed the "Bride of the Mediterranean" its one of the top 10 largest cities in the middle east. Indians will feel right at home! Its just like any other Indian city, with its hustle and bustle, chaotic traffic and street foods. I saw some really old car models back then, though now it may be changed. Lots of things to see- the new library of Alexendria, where once the famous library of the ancient world stood ( and was accidently burnt down!) , there's the Citadel of Qalitbay, The Catacombs of Kol El Shaqafa and course, the Lighthouse of Alexendria, one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world ( it no longer stands). And pompey's column too- testimony to the various chapters of Greece, Rome and Egypt all intertwined. The city has layers of history- worth a visit.
